Teaching Philosophy
Variety and Diversity as Strength
My teaching approach is centered on learning and performing a variety of piano styles, including classical, jazz, rock, and blues, while also establishing a solid base in music theory and ear training. Grasping the "how" of music equips students with the necessary knowledge and skills to compose their own music as they refine their individual talents. This approach not only makes learning enjoyable but also encourages personal creativity from the outset. I am dedicated to teaching the types and styles of music that resonate with and inspire my students, the music they are eager to learn. While mastering technique, physical skills, and theory requires time and dedication, the educational experience is greatly enriched and becomes more pleasurable when it revolves around music that the student is passionate about.

Jon enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1990 and successfully completed Boot Camp, Marine Combat Training, and the Armed Forces School of Music Basic Course. Upon graduating from the School of Music, Jon served as a Marine musician in New Orleans, LA, starting his professional musical career. Five years later, Jon joined the Navy, where he traveled and performed worldwide as a pianist. His Navy tenure included further musical studies at the Armed Forces School of Music's Musical Unit Leader Course, which focused on performance, conducting, ear training, and music writing and arranging. Jon retired from active duty in 2010, having served 20 years as a military musician.
Following military retirement, Jon attended college at Old Dominion University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. In 2015, Jon was hired as a “Jazz Ranger” at New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park - selected for the position after a nationwide search. Within the National Park Service, Jon performed and recorded with several world-class, Grammy-winning, and international artists, developed and delivered interpretive Ranger Talks, conducted musical master classes for visiting schools, created and implemented curriculum for JAZZ Summer Camps, taught and mentored interns, recorded musical groups, taught individual lessons in piano, voice, and trumpet, and composed, recorded and performed original songs. He also enhanced the Jazz NHP social media and website to host a variety of musical videos created from live performances at NPS facilities and at venues and festivals around the city of New Orleans.
In 2022, Jon returned home to the Pacific Northwest, where he taught at Fairview Middle School in Bremerton, Wa, and received the “Excellence in Education” award for his work during his first school year. Currently, Jon works within the Central Kitsap School District teaching Music and Movement at Clear Creek and Cougar Valley Elementary Schools.
